What should I check before installing a manual well pump?
Confirm casing size, static water level, cylinder depth, pipe and rod length, base or cap style, and a winter drain-down plan before installation. Protect the open casing from debris and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every component.
Manual well-pump installation is a system job. Confirm all dimensions and components before pulling pipe or opening the well casing. Keep the casing protected from debris, use a suitable pipe holder when handling sections, and follow the pump manufacturer’s instructions for the cylinder, rod, pipe, and seals.
Plan winter operation before installation
Some Heller-Aller pump designs drain when the handle is lifted fully, but connected pressure-side piping and hoses may retain water. Insulate or drain every exposed section as appropriate for your climate. Never assume an anti-freeze pump head protects every part of the system.
For potable water, use approved materials and have local professionals handle work that involves well construction, electrical equipment, or code requirements. Test the system carefully for leaks and sanitary integrity before relying on it.
Steps
Verify the site measurements
Confirm well casing diameter, total depth, static water level, planned cylinder depth, and delivery location. Match the pump base or cap to the casing before starting.
Stage every system component
Lay out the pump head, cylinder, drop pipe, sucker rod, foot valve if specified, couplings, seals, and tools. Check that thread sizes and component lengths match the plan.
Protect the well casing
Keep debris out of the casing and use a purpose-built pipe holder when adding or removing pipe sections. Keep hands clear of pinch points and secure each section before continuing.
Install to the manufacturer configuration
Follow the manufacturer’s sequence for cylinder placement, pipe and rod connections, and base or cap attachment. Do not substitute an unverified configuration for a deeper or shared-casing installation.
Test, sanitize, and protect from freezing
Check operation and leaks, address sanitary concerns, and establish the drain-down or insulation steps for the pump and every connected pipe before the first freeze.
